Aesops fables The Belly and the Members
One fine day it occurred to the Members of the Body that they were doing all the work and the Belly was having all the food. So they held a meeting, and after a long discussion, decided to strike work till the Belly consented to take its proper share of the work. So for a day or two, the Hands refused to take the food, the Mouth refused to receive it, and the Teeth had no work to do. But after a day or two the Members began to find that they themselves were not in a very active condition: the Hands could hardly move, and the Mouth was all parched and dry, while the Legs were unable to support the rest. So thus they found that even the Belly in its dull quiet way was doing necessary work for the Body, and that all must work together or the Body will go to pieces. Aesops Fables Who was Aesop?
Aesop is a mysterious figure. His biography was written by many ancient authors, such as Herodotus, Aristophenes, and Plato. Most of them can be discounted. There are too many different versions. Some have him living in Thrace,Samos, Athens, Sardis, Ethiopia, and Phrygia. All these places claim him. One common thred through it all is that he was a slave from birth. He may have been born in the 6th century BC. All agree that he was one ugly excuse for a man. It appears that he was freed from slavery at one point. In the 14th century AD a greek monk published a collection of his fables. Zafiropoulos (2001, 1) also defines the characteristics Aesopic fables. His definition states that a fable is: ‘a brief and simplistic story with a constant structure, generally with animal protagonists… which gives an exemplary and popular message on practical ethics and which comment, usually in a cautionary way, on the course of action followed or avoided in a particular way.’ Who can forget the story about the Ant and the Grasshopper. It was made into a cartoon with the poor grasshopper having to play the fiddle for his supper because he neglected to put some food by in the summer like the ants.
