"Erectile Dysfunction Is An Affair Of The Heart, In More Ways Than One..."

"Erectile Dysfunction Occurs In 10% Of The Male Population..."

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

When Viagra was introduced in 1998, ED escaped from the closet and ever since the buzz has continued to flood the country.

What used to be called impotence is now labeled as ED. In the past ED was thought to be a psychological problem, but research has now proven that psychology is only present in only 10% of the cases. The culprit is now involved with the nerves and the heart.

Defined as the inability to maintain or sustain an erection, erectile dysfunction (ED), may be just temporary or the symptom of something greater. Either way, with so many different ways today to cure the problem there is no longer any need to ignore it, hoping it will go away. The real danger Eerectile dysfunction poses is to a man's quality of life, affecting his self-esteem and relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and especially sexual partners.

The good news is that it is a treatable condition and cannot be blamed on the a sexual partner or a lack of interest in sex. Since ED arises from physical problems, thanks to medical advances and research, many of them are treatable.

It is not only a problem in men over 70, younger men get ED, also. ED is not an isolated symptom - over 10 million men in America suffer from ED. It is apparent now that ED is a key indicator of male health in general and male sexual health in particular

Every Man Should Know This

Erectile dysfunction, if it is a recurring problem, can be a precursor of cardiovascular disease. This can be a double edged sword - not only is your sex life kaput, but you may be in poor health as well. That's the bad news. The good news is that with the proper diagnosis and treatment along with some changes in lifestyle, both problems can be mitigated at the same time

An erection is an affair of the heart and is directly connected to his penis. Under sexual stimulation, blood is pumped from the heart into the corpora cavernosa, a pair of tube-like structures in the penis. Muscle tissue in the penis relax and holds the blood in place, thus sustaining an erection. If blood flow is restricted owing to inflexible blood vessels, erections are not sustainable. This may be caused by high blood pressure or smoking. Another cause is a reduced production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential because it allows the vessels in the penis (and other places) to dilate or expand. This dilation increases blood flow and the erection is sustained.

As males age, many risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease also begin to appear - smoking, diabetes, depression, obesity, physical inactivity, and high blood pressure. As a reliable predictor of heart disease and stroke, a study of more than 9,000men in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2005 found that men with ED had a substantial increased risk of cardiovascular disease

Are You A Couch Potato?

Many experts recommend exercise as a way to help prevent not only diabetes and hypertension, but also erectile dysfunction. So get off your butt because ED can be caused by too mush time on the couch. Are you a couch potato? A large study of 22,000 health professionals in the U.S., published in the Journal of Urology in 2006, found that regular physical activity of any type reduced the risk of ED. The authors of the study suggested that maintaining sexual health might serve as strong motivation of men to lead a healthier, more active life - couch potatoes take notice.

Remember, many other factors can cause or contribute to ED besides incipient or actual circulatory problems - notable the after effects of prostrate surgery, nerve disorders, excessive alcohol consumption, low testosterone, and certain medications, particularly some antidepressants and sedatives.

Listen! Keep Your Eye on the Big Picture!

Everyone's sexual desire is not the same. It varies from one person to another across a lifetime. Desire declines with age for many people, both male and female, but for most men ED is terrible news. Do not ignore ED. It is not a trivial matter when the ability to perform sexual intercourse is lost. ED damages self-image for both partners, producing waves of anxiety, conflict, and depression.

OK! Take This Advice To The Bank

If you suspect you have ED, consult your doctor. Even though ED was once covered by oncologist, your family doctor now knows a lot about ED. Because there is no diagnostic test for ED, your own sensibilities are key. Don't just settle for a prescription - get to the root of your problem. No drug should take the place of detailed diagnosis. Remember, drugs are not appropriate for all men and may have serious side effects when taken in conjunction with other medications. A psychotherapist is not our of the question. Diabetes and high blood pressure must be ruled out. Begin treating these conditions if they occur. Problems in your cardiovascular system may be related to your penis.

Actions Men Can Take On Their Own.
  • Quit smoking, if you smoke - smoking increases the risk of ED.
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol must be checked regularly.
  • Walk, cycle, swim for 30 to 60 minutes per day - or any other physical activity that gets your heart pumping.
  • More than two drinks per day is excessive for men.
  • If you believe erectile dysfunction is caused by medications, switch to another drug.

Erectile dysfunction affects most men at one time or another in their life and the chance of occurrence only grows with age. A 1999 survey conducted by the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) reported that 22 out of every 1000 men sought help for erectile dysfunction. That's 2% of the population! And almost 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience difficulties getting or maintaining an erection.

The first important factor is determining if the dysfunction is caused by physical or emotional issues. The only way to test if the problem is physical or psychological is by excluding physical diseases that may be at fault.

The majority of long-term erection difficulties are caused by some sort of physical ailment. The most common are vascular disease, which is the hardening of arteries, certain kinds of prescription drugs, and fatigue. These are just a few examples though in a long list. In these cases, blood is unable to surge or remain in the penis.

While approximately 90% of erectile dysfunction cases are physiological, the other 10% are caused by psychological factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, stress, depression and loss of self-worth. This sort of dysfunction starts with the brain.

The difficulty may be either long-lasting or temporary. Either way, it's an embarrassing problem that can be easily avoided in the future. There are many different methods to cure erectile dysfunction, both medical and non-medical. It's important to remember that any sort of treatment should be used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. Drugs, alcohol and smoking play a part in ED.

Medication prescribed by a doctor is common, either oral or injected directly into the penis. Medications like Viagra have helped thousands of men across the country, but also have adverse side effects including nausea and dizziness and are incompatible with certain medications. They must be taken about an hour before sex is possible. Surgery is another method, but is expensive with a long recuperation period. Surgery involves prosthetic implants, or a pump inserted into the genital area that the male would have to pump before sexual intercourse.

Therapy, penis pumps, and herbal supplements are three non-medical methods of curing ED. Therapy, with a registered sex therapist or other mental health professional, is quite effective in cases of psychological-caused ED, but not in physical cases. Therapy tends to be a long process, and some men are embarrassed to talk at length about their sexual problems. Penis pumps are used by inserting the penis into a tube and using a pump until erection is achieved, at which point a ring is rolled onto the base of the penis to keep the erection hard. It works, but the pump must be used each time before intercourse and doesn't address the real problem, only acting as a temporary fix.

A safe and easy method is herbal supplements, like VigRX Plus™. These supplements are made from organically-produced plants chosen for their aphrodisiacal that have been used for hundreds of years in different parts of the world. Herbal supplements are completely free of side effects and deliver quick results. The user can stop the treatment at any time with no adverse effects. Herbal supplements not only address the physical, but the psychological factors as well, as it increases libido.

It is important to talk to your doctor before undergoing any sort of treatment.
