One of the oldest herb manuals or herbal comes from China. The Pen T`sao Ching (about 2700BC) was created under the Emperor Shen Nung. He sampled oaver 350 herbs during his lifetime until he died from an overdose of one herb that proved too toxic.

However, the knowledge was preserved by his court and added to by hundreds of Chinese generations.

The Egyptians provided an herbal in the Ebers Papyrus which is preserved in the library of the University of Leipzig, Germany. It was found between the legs of a mummy around 1862 at Luxor, Egypt. It contains 110 pages of medical advice, incatations, and herbal remedies and is believed to be almost 4000 years old. It was created in 1550 BCE.

The western world has the De Materia Medica of Dioscorides. It is Latin for "Medical Mattersl". Dioscorides was a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist who procticed during the time Nero ran Rome. You remember he was the Emperor who fiddled while Rome burned.

The De Materia Medica consisted of five volumes and was in use until about the 17th century in Europe. Many sexual herbs for enhancing the libodo were included in this work.

The Leech Book of Bald, the Saxon herbal, dates from the first half of the 10th century. It was derived from Dioscorides texts on herbs.

The church had a large influence on this work and it includes remedies and treatments. Not only were herbs used to cure disease, but they were also worn as amulets to ward off evil. Some of these herbs included were yarrow, plantain, wood betony, mugwort, and vervain.

This era in Europe was the age of superstition, evil witches and warlocks which had their origin in the pagan beliefs which the church suppressed.

India produced its own herbal around 1500 BC. It is called Ayurveda medicine and it codified over 25,000 plant drugs. Physicians and herbalist came from all over the world to study about this universal medicine and the Ayurveda teachings.

Leaving history behind, we now turn to those herbs which enhance the sex drive or the libido. There are many products out there which do nothing more than a placebo. This is quackery and sexual herbs have their share of quacks. There are several herbs which are proven to produce an increase in desire and enhance the libido. They also improve endurance.
